Rather than have the added cost, why not try growing a culinary herb garden yourself. To get yourself started growing a culinary herb garden you will only have a fairly small outlay, you will need some containers for growing the herbs in, some stones to ensure good drainage for the herbs, some suitable soil and finally the seeds or herbs plants which you are planning to grow. This small invest will save you money on your weekly shopping bill. Once you have started growing a culinary herb garden you will find you are using them more and more. The best thing about growing a culinary herb garden is that you will know that they have not been grown with chemicals and they are of course, free. You do not want to have to start growing a culinary herb garden all over again because to used to much of them. A good rule of thumb is never to cut away more than a third of the plant. This will allow enough of the plant to remain to re-grow and more importantly to re-grow stronger. You will probably have to deal with different types of herbs differently. For these herbs make sure that you always use a sharp pair of scissors. Do not tear the stem as it may damage the remainder of the stem and will then not continue to grow properly. Tearing can in fact cause sections of the herb to die. If you are planning on drying some of your herbs for potpourri or drying for tea infusions then it is important to first check if the is the plant is an annual or a perennial. It is important to understand your herbs growth cycle, and if you are harvesting the herb for drying then you can arrange this at the best time for the plant. So with a bit of research and a lot of enthusiasm you will soon be brewing your own herb teas and cooking with fresh herbs all because you put aside a little time to setup growing a culinary herb garden. |
