Herbal Acne Treatment

During puberty the last thing that a teenager needs to have to worry about is their skin, and of course, this is the time when acne is most likely to strike. During the changes in a teenagers body there is often an over productions of the oil, sebum in the skin. This increased oil, combined with bacteria on the skin causes the acne. There are herbal treatments for just about everything these days, so it is not surprising that there is a herbal acne treatment. The two main properties which the acne herbal remedies are based on are the antiseptic and antibacterial qualities of the herbs.

Tea tree oil is a great herbal remedy. It is important to make sure that tea tree oil is correctly diluted before it is applied. Tea tree oil is accepted as having good cleansing properties and is used in many commercial chemical products as an extra selling point. Tea tree oil is a good herbal acne treatment as it antiseptic and antibacterial, therefore it cannot reduce the sebum production, but it can reduce the level of bacterial infection which causes the acne.

Basil is usually associated with Italian pasta dishes, but it is also a good herbal acne treatment. Basil leaves are infused in water and the water is then applied, using cotton wool or a clean face flannel, to the problem areas. You can also use basil oil, this is dabbed on the infected area, left for a few minuets and then wiped clean. Many people grow their own basil, so understanding the other potential uses for the herb is always useful.

There is another herb called burdock. This is different to the previously discussed herbs in that the herbal acne treatment is from the roots, not the leaves. The root can be turned into either a tincture or a facial wash for the treatment of acne. The other useful property of this herb is its anti-inflammatory properties which can be accessed through a tea form.

At the end of the day a herbal acne treatment can be just as effective as a traditional cleanser, but you will need to be consistent which ever root you take. Keeping acne at bay is about keeping the bacteria to a minimum and ensuring that the excess oil on the face does not allow the bacteria to breed and cause the acne. So be positive and try the treatments everyday and before you know it the herbal acne treatment you have chosen will start to take effect and with maintenance this control will continue until the development phase of being a teenager has passed.
