So where do you start if you are new to indoor herb gardens? Well, it is important spend time at the beginning and set it all up properly, this will hugely reduce the amount of maintenance which is required. The plants need to be set up with the correct drainage in the pots so that they do not waterlog and in a good spot so that they get the correct amount of sun. Remember that one of the advantages of indoor herb gardens over a fixed, ground garden, is that you can move the plants inside during the cold winter months. You can also move them in the summer if you think that the sun is too strong for them.

When you are starting out indoor herb gardens you will need to purchase a few supplies. Firstly, the containers, these need to be deep enough to be able to put plenty of stones in the bottom to ensure that there is good drainage. Also they need to still be small enough to be portable in order to protect you herbs during the colder times.

Once you have chosen the type of herbs you want to grow, you then have two choices, either to grow the herbs from seeds, or to buy seedlings. Buying the herb plants means that you save on the waiting time and you will not have to be looking at apparently empty containers while the seeds start to grow. This is the route I would take, but I accept that there is a satisfaction in having grown the herbs from seeds.

Now you just have to water and check on your containers and make sure that all is ok. It you really want to show off your wonderful herbs then it may be worth researching some recipes in which you can use your herbs, this brings great satisfaction to the whole indoor herb gardens experience.
